It’s a font that Smiles. It’s an italic that is not slanted. And when it’s slanted … it goes the other way! Campuni, our “charming confidant” (and best-selling sans) got a major update. The letters of this font family are still modeled on the handwritten forms of italics, but upright. This is the core of its friendly nature: If you’re looking for a contemporary, charming, and trustworthy character in a font, you’ll find it here. However, we expanded the scope of expressions you can employ with Campuni.
As with most modern sans-serif typefaces, Campuni’s design is based on low-contrast, almost monolinear strokes. This ensures a neat and clear appearance. Its almost calligraphic forms and a tinge of sparkle in the joints provide the perfect foundation for a steady rhythm between characters (just like you’d find in meticulous handwriting). Careful spacing ensures that this rhythmic character is preserved on the page and on screen, making for a pleasant reading experience.
Despite its flawless legibility in body text, Campuni is definitely eye-catching in display sizes. (Decrease letterspacing for some additional punch.) In the latest update, we revisited these capabilities as a display typeface. This led us to add 28 new styles, increasing the total to 36 (from 8) and turning Campuni into a superfamily.
Here’s where Campuni starts to Smile.
Campuni Smile, to begin with, is a new subfamily that makes Campuni even friendlier and informal by gently curving terminals and stroke endings. With more flow and more connectivity between letters (with strokes seeming to “point” to adjecent ones), the impression on the reader is approachable and innocent. This is what we call the Smile. Keep in mind that Smile letterforms are a bit more complex. Campuni and Campuni Smile are easily combined when needed. One example: You can use Campuni Smile in headlines for added flair and Campuni in small sizes for optimum on-screen rendering.
For both Campuni and Campuni Smile, we developed a full set of italics. But not just any old italics. What kind of italics? We call them Retalic. As Campuni is already a back-slanted italic, we figured the only way of creating a Campuni version for emphasis that’s true to the concept was further back-slanting it. Thus, Campuni Retalic (and Campuni Smile Retalic) lean to the left instead of the right, creating surprise and a moment of delight when it’s called for. You think that’s a rather “loud” alternative to a traditional italic? You’d be correct. But that’s how charismatic characters are: sometimes loud. Always fascinating.
With OpenType features, you can even turn your Campuni and Campuni Italic fonts into Smile ones and the other way round. This way, you can use your own GREP rules and web scripting to fine-tune your titles, headlines, and even your body copy down to a t.
There are more technical features that make Campuni a powerful typographical tool. Each style has an Extended Latin character set with 750+ glyphs, eleven sets of figures, case-sensitive forms, arrows, boxed and circled characters, and some other goodies. Its 9 weights span from Thin to Black. Use Campuni for logo design and brand identities, especially in food, leisure, travel, wellness, and health-related fields. Campuni is also a great choice for advertising, packaging, and corporate design, or even signage and wayfinding in those industries. However, the range of topics that Campuni excels in doesn’t stop there. They vary from retail, e-commerce, and music to games, toys, childcare, and family-themed events. If your project needs to radiate warmth, friendliness, and a bit of charismatic quirk, Campuni is happy to serve you. It’s as charming the confidant as ever—now with a Smile.
